All About St Louis Pediatric Eye Exams

Vision problems are extremely common in children, yet it’s uncommon for kids to complain about their sight. As a result, the number of undetected pediatric vision conditions is very high. When left untreated, many kids’ eye problems can interfere with learning. Even basic education skills, such as reading and writing, may become a challenge. The only way to find out for sure if your child can see crisp and clear is by having a pediatric eye exam performed. At Overland Optical Family Eye Care, our eye doctors will check your child’s entire visual system thoroughly. Located in St. Louis, we welcome kids from all neighboring areas, such as Bridgeton, St. Charles, St. Peters, Lake St. Louis, O’Fallon, New Town and Wentzville, MO.

What should you expect at our Bridgeton pediatric eye exams?

Upon your arrival, we’ll sit down together to discuss your child’s medical case history, family eye history and perinatal history. It’s important to tell us if your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive blinking
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Delayed motor skills
  • Trouble maintaining a gaze or eye contact
  • Weak eye tracking skills
  • Failure to pass a school vision test

What tests will we perform?

The specific procedures and eye tests that we’ll perform depend upon the age, development and symptoms of your child.

With infants, we’ll check that your baby’s visual system is developing normally such as your baby’s gaze, assessing the pupils’ response to light and checking the ability to fixate and follow.
A variety of evaluation techniques are used with pre-school children, especially when your child hasn’t yet mastered the alphabet or is too shy to answer our optometrist’s questions.
School aged kids will be asked to read a standard eye chart to help us diagnose nearsightedness or farsightedness. We’ll also check for astigmatism, visual acuity, eye alignment and ocular health.

When should you schedule a pediatric eye exam in St Charles?

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), babies should have their first eye exam done at 6 months, then at 3 years of age, followed by another exam prior to starting school at age 5-6. If no vision correction is required, it’s recommended to schedule follow-up exams about every two years throughout school years. Yet if your child needs eyeglasses, contact lenses or any treatment to see clearly, experts strongly recommend yearly pediatric eye exams.

What types of eye problems are common in kids?

The most usual diagnoses in children are astigmatism, nearsighted vision and farsighted vision. Amblyopia, commonly called “lazy eye”, is another typical diagnosis. It is generally treated by patching the stronger eye. If strabismus is uncovered, eye exercises may be helpful to strengthen eye muscles, or surgery may be needed – depending upon the severity. Our eye doctors also look out for conditions such as difficulty with accommodation (focusing), ocular diseases convergence insufficiency, eye-teaming and binocularity problems.
