Toric Lenses for Astigmatism

Expert Contact Lens Services & Eye Care for Astigmatism, in St. Charles

contact-lenses-for-astigmatism-st-charles-moIf you are diagnosed with astigmatism, it means that your cornea is asymmetrical. As a result of this uneven corneal shape, light isn’t focused properly on the retina when it enters your eye. This blurs both your near and distant vision. Toric contact lenses, which are specialized for astigmatism, are considered to be the best contacts for correcting this ocular condition. At Overland Optical Family Eye Care, our qualified optometrists will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine if you have astigmatism, and prescriptions for toric lenses are offered as a part of our total eye care services. Contact us today to schedule your appointment in our St. Charles, MO, office!

Toric lenses are available in both hard, gas permeable (GP) and soft versions, however, soft toric lenses are by far the most popular. Composed from either a highly permeable silicone hydrogel material or from a conventional hydrogel, these lenses offer clear, comfortable vision. Fitting toric lenses is more complex than normal contacts, and our St. Charles eye doctors are experienced and skilled in performing these hard-to-fit contact lens eye exams. Nowadays, there is a wide selection of exceptional toric lenses on the market, and we’ll advise you on the best options for your eyes.woman-contact-lense-st-charles-mo

Your toric lens will have two prescriptions, one to resolve your nearsightedness or farsightedness, and one to correct astigmatism. Regular contacts can rotate in all directions in your eyes and your vision will remain constant. Yet with toric lenses, they need to remain vertically aligned in order to use the two prescriptions effectively and provide clear vision from all points of your eye. Each time you blink, they should move only up and down – and not all around. To accomplish this, some toric lenses are weighted at the bottom.

There’s no such thing as a toric lens that will work for every individual. It will often take quite a bit of trial and error until the proper fit is found. With no rush, our St. Charles optometrists will work with you patiently until your toric lenses give comfortable, crisp vision. Satisfied patients and excellent eyesight are our goals – and we have the eye care expertise to ensure that your toric lenses fit perfectly.

If you have astigmatism, take a look for yourself through a pair of toric lenses.
